Team Edward or Team Jacob?

Everyone knows the most important part of Twilight is which team you are: Edward or Jacob. So in anticipation of Thursday's class, I'm sharing the link to Taylor Lautner's epic Team Edward vs. Team Jacob skit on SNL. Just remember, if the debate ever gets too heated, we can all agree that Bella is a whiny do nothing that doesn't deserve either one of them.

  1. Not only was this probably the biggest debate of the 21-century, but I remember girls in my school comparing guys in our school to these two characters. They would say so-and-so is such an Edward, or so-and-so is a Jacob. I found these comparisons very weird and kind of disturbing back in the day, because all I knew about these characters was that one was a vampire that sparkled and the other was a werewolf with abs. Looking back on it now, I think that it provides more evidence as to why these books were so popular with younger girls, it provided them with a fantasy of what the ideal guy was to be like, whether they were team Edward or team Jacob, and they then could find that guy in real life.

    1. This is EXACTLY what happened at my school, too! There was this group of girls that were super obsessed with everything about Twilight. They even included all of Jacob's werewolf friends after the other movies came out. I found it really ridiculous because by the time the next movies were coming out, we were already in high school. And most of them had boyfriends who were NOT an ideal like Edward or Jacob. But maybe that's why they were so obsessed with the movie characters?

  2. I find it odd how these are the two boys that are part of the big debate, even though they are by no means the only males in these books or this series. I was always a fan of Jasper as a teen, who is sensitive to emotions but still one of the strongest of the Cullen clan. Why is it that we focus on these two? Is it because Bella is such a blank slate that we automactically limit our choices to the ones that are available to her?

    1. Yes! There are definitely other male characters in the book that are more interesting (ie. Jasper, Sam, Emmett). All of these characters have very compelling back stories, although these aren't revealed until later books. Most characters besides Jacob, Edward and Bella exist solely to move along the saga that is Edward and Bella's love. Perhaps it is because the rest of the characters are so underdeveloped that the focus remains on Jacob and Edward.

  3. Also I find it odd that this ever was a debate. If I were in a similar situation and people were choosing teams...I'd say they're crazy. Anyone who wouldn't choose Edward is just infatuated with Taylor Lautner because it's quite obvious that Bella "loves" Edward more.

    1. I also found this strange, especially before the actual movie came out because Jacob has a really small role and character in the first book. He doesn't actually become a big part of Bella's life until the second book. But I think people were still infatuated by him because even though it wasn't known that he is a werewolf, there was still something mysterious about him that people were curious about. I know that I wanted to know more about him after reading the first book. I think the whole team thing definitely took off after the movie came out and people were obsessed with Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner rather than Edward and Jacob.
