"Girl Crush"

So, I’m not sure how many in the class are country music fans, but I am a BIG one. Recently a country band, Little Big Town, released a new single called “Girl Crush.” Lately there has been a little controversy about what the song is really about. This news article talks about the misconception of the lyrics. The whole problem has to do with country music fans believing the song has to do with a lesbian relationship. Although this is not true if you really listen to the lyrics, I find it very interesting that it would even be an issue. The article is definitely worth a read and the song is also embedded in the article.

  1. Okay, reading this article there is one big thing that stands out to me: the fact that people were CALLING IN to the radio station to complain that they were "promoting a gay agenda." America is far from perfect, but here is one great thing about our capitalist system: if a company or institution is doing or saying things that you do not approve of, you have the opportunity to take your business elsewhere. If you don't like the song and you feel the station is promoting something you don't agree with, switch the station. These people felt the need to call in because they wanted to make sure THEIR opinions were heard, even if they won't listen or support someone else's.

I'm not saying discrimination isn't a big problem, I just want to point out that there is something deeper in our society that allows for the very existence of discrimination. We live in a society that allows people to believe that their own opinion takes precedence over anybody else's. I think changing this fact is the only way to allow discrimination to end, but how can that be possible with how the Western value system is set up?
